WhatsApp bans over 74 lakhs Indian accounts in August
In a significant development in India’s digital landscape, WhatsApp has imposed restrictions on a substantial number of accounts, totaling 3,506,905, within its platform. Notably, this figure includes 3.1 lakh accounts that were preemptively blocked, meaning they were restricted even before any user complaints were filed. The magnitude of this action underscores the tech company’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for its users.
During the month of September alone, WhatsApp took action against a staggering 72.28 lakhs accounts across the country. Out of this substantial number, the 3.1 lakh proactive deactivations are a testament to the platform’s proactive stance against potential misuse.
In response to the growing need for oversight and accountability in the digital realm, the Indian government introduced the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) mechanism earlier this year. This mechanism empowers users to voice their concerns and register complaints against decisions made by social media platforms.
